BearFilms

This year BearFilms and the company behind it, Bear Entertainment Distributing, turn twenty-five. From the start it has been a bear workshop that put hairy, massive, flesh-and-blood men front and centre.

When it launched in the early 2000’s, most of the gay adult industry still favoured smooth-skinned, slim or sharply muscled bodies. Thickly furred, stocky, chubby or simply naturally solid men barely got a look-in. BearFilms filled exactly that gap. It showed guys a lot of bears could recognise as themselves, their friends or their fantasies: big, hairy-chested bears, more muscular but still furry cubs, soft-bellied daddy bears and leaner but densely hairy guys. Not polished models, but real, lived-in men.

The studio began online and soon released DVD series as well. In those early years the discs and the website built the reputation together. Bear audiences appreciated finally seeing their own type on screen: thick arms, bushy bellies, densely furred chests, natural faces. In 2008 it even picked up a professional award for best bear film. The products sold well in both Europe and the States, especially among those who moved in the overlap between the leather and bear worlds.

Over the years the content shifted. The early condom scenes gradually gave way to a bareback direction, and the range expanded. Duos, threesomes, group scenes and solo material appeared, sometimes with a heavier leather or harder edge. The studio always stressed variety of bodies: big, muscular bears sat alongside softer, fuller figures and younger, furry cubs. In 2011 the site was redesigned; in 2012 Mania Media took a majority stake while co-founder Mike Mason — a bear himself — stayed on as shareholder and part of the management.

Today BearFilms operates as a streaming site with regular updates. In the mix of new and remastered scenes, hairy, massive, natural men still dominate. Among bears the reception is largely positive: many value the authenticity and the everyday bear reality it shows. Some criticise the recycling of older material or the more polished tone. Twenty-five years on, though, BearFilms is still the place where the bear world gets to see its own bodies, its own fur and its own desires reflected back.
