This season, Belgium cult designer Walter Van Beirendonck opted for a statement collection. The statement being: This is clothing for me and my people, who are bears. Van Beirendonck sent out a catwalk of look-alike (gay) bear-like models in colorful sportswear and original rave gear. Inspired acid green or pink jackets in techno fabrics debuted to a soundtrack of trancey Belgium New Beat. The designer didn’t care much about the samples sizes, raising a few eyebrows in the audience, including those of Suzy Menkes.
Van Beirendonck, himself, presented the finale, modeling the show’s last outfit. His mates followed wearing little white and red briefs. Returning backstage, the designer’s wide smile seemed to say, “That’s how I am; that’s how we are.”
